Today, I was inspired to create a composite image from some images I shot quite a while ago. I worked with Toma a fair bit while we both lived in Anchorage, Alaska. She's an absolute delight to work with and we had a lot of fun together on all our shoots. Nothing was too crazy to try and it was often difficult to pick our favorite images from each session. Our Harlequin Romance series was one of my favorites. We had the benefit of the skill and talent of her friend Yulia, who is a professional body & face painter.

This was one of those sessions where all the pieces came together and today, all the pieces came together once more. I love the effect, the smoke (which I shot at an entirely different time) creates with this shot.

Choosing the right location for an outdoor photography session is so important. When photographing couples, children and families I want an environment that they can interact with and be themselves in. So when planning a session with my clients I ask them where their favorite spots are. I’m looking for places that have meaning to them or their families, something I find creates more memorable images.

This isn’t about getting the session done in 15 minutes, this is about making sure my clients get images they love, and the right location is a huge part of that. Taking a couple to the park where they spent part of their first date brings back all the memories and emotions from that first date, without the nervousness that went with it. My clients get to relax and reminisce while we work together to create special images for them.

Working on location is one of the joys of my work. I love going with clients out to sites that are special to them or unique sites to create images that just can’t be recreated in the studio. The Mukilteo Lighthouse is one of the most memorable spots for me as a child. I used to go there with my mom and brothers fairly regularly.

At the lighting workshop I attended we had the opportunity to brave the Pacific Northwest’s winter weather and create some unique images at the Mukilteo beach. Jake’s rugged good looks and rough jacket lent itself very well to the mariner theme.
